Local services underpin life in rural England.

From the village shop and Post Office to the local school, village hall or doctors' surgery, adequate services are vital to life in the countryside and its people.

But many rural services are in decline.

Delivering services in the countryside can be difficult. Government targets are often urban-based and tend to focus activity - and investment - away from rural area.

In addition, funding settlements take little account of the additional cost of rural delivery.
