Best Practice

Ruralfocus.net aims to celebrate good practice among its members as well as publicising good practice from elsewhere.

We draw together existing and emerging good practice which might be useful to individuals and organisations working for better rural services.

The resources below are exemplars of good practice with expertise in rural service delivery:

BEST PRACTICE WEBSITES:

Communities of Practice
Accessible through the IDeA website, this website includes several hundred small communities where practitioners can collaborate on documents and share information in forums. You can join any of the relevant communities or set up your own.

Crime Reduction Discussion Forum
This website has been designed to enable crime reduction practitioners (and especially members of statutory partnerships) to exchange ideas and experience.

Info4local
This website allows the user to register for email alerts for newly released information from central government departments, agencies and public bodies.  Alerts can be delivered as they happen, or grouped into one or two emails a day.

Institute of Rural Health
The institute's website includes a comprehensive listing of research, publications and further links in the UK and abroad.  The site also includes a rural proofing for health toolkit.

Improvement and Development Agency
(IDeA)
The sister body to the Local Government Association, providing information and advice on good practice and innovation.  Although aimed at local government, much information is applicable to other public and voluntary sector organisations. There is also a wealth of resources on this website about effective partnerships which will be relevant to a much wider audience.

Local Government Analysis & Research
Keeping on top of information from public policy organisations and think tanks can be time-consuming.  While most provide their own e-alert system, these can build up in your inbox and eventually get overlooked.  Signing up for the monthly LGAR analysis bulletin can be a good way to keep on top of essential research and analysis.

National Council for Voluntary Organisations
The website for the largest umbrella body for the voluntary and community sector in England provides a host of member resources and the ability to sign up to an e-newsletter. Users can also access a range of subject and sector specific forums.

NHS Networks
A means of promoting and connecting the many networks which exist throughout the NHS - and encouraging the formation of new ones. Includes access to clinical networks and administrative networks; local, regional and national networks and loose networks which are simply people with shared interests sharing ideas.

The Policy Hub
Developed by the government's Social Research Unit - which provides access to initiatives, projects and tools to support policy making - this website links to a range of resources and tools from the UK and around the world. Again, you can sign up for a monthly bulletin and updates to keep up to date.

Research Councils UK
Provides information on the UK’s seven academic research councils investing £2.8 billion annually on research.  You can sign up for a monthly RCUK Bulletin providing news on Research Council activities.  Also available is RCUK Dispatch which gives a fortnightly round up of research stories, funding announcements and Research Council events.
